Gardening is very healthy, both physically and mentally. In addition to providing exercise, gardening delivers health benefits in the fresh foods you eat and in the calming presence of flowers in your environment. Gardening Tips to Avoid Injury and Discomfort
To get the most out of gardening’s health benefits, it’s a good idea to do a bit of stretching to help avoid injury or irritating existing conditions while out in the garden. Here are some tips to stay healthy:
Heading out into the garden is just like going for a jog or visiting the gym. Before you grab all your gardening tools, practice some full-body stretches to warm up your muscles. Target your arms, legs and back, because the muscles in these areas will be put to good use while you’re planting, weeding and watering. And before you finish for the day, do some more stretching to help loosen any muscles that tightened during your gardening work.
Banish bending Gardening Tips to Avoid Injury and Discomfort
Many Americans suffer from chronic back pain, which can put a damper on the gardening experience. Consider installing raised garden beds, which allow you to garden without have to bend over. And container gardens can be placed on tables or deck railings to make it easy to reach plants.
Hand and wrist protection a must
Weeding, hoeing, raking, shoveling – the repetitive motions of gardening can lead to hand and wrist pain, and worsen existing conditions such as arthritis. Taking steps to minimize irritation and discomfort while you work can help ensure your gardening tasks don’t create aches or worsen pain. Consider wearing an arthritis glove, like the Imak-made glove commended by the Arthritis Foundation, to provide mild compression and warmth while you work. Because the gloves are made of cotton material with an open-fingertip design, they won’t make your hands hot or hinder movement. Designed by an orthopedic surgeon, the arthritis gloves are also fully washable, so you don’t have to worry about getting a little dirt on them as you go about your gardening tasks. An added bonus – wearing any kind of glove can help you avoid another common gardening injury: blisters.
Keep skin protected
Because gardening keeps a person outdoors a lot during the warm, summer months, it’s important to protect your skin from insect bites and sunburn. While most insect bites are just an irritation, sunburn can cause serious, long-term skin damage. Use insect repellent and sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Also wear a wide-brimmed, lightweight hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes and keep the sun off your head.
Lift carefully
Between the heavy bags of soil, the many tools needed, or full baskets of vegetables being carried into the kitchen for processing, lifting is a common labor when gardening. Remember to lift from a squatting position, with your back straight, so that your legs do the work, not your back. When kneeling down, use gardening knee pads or even just a rolled up towel to cushion your joints from the hard, damp ground. Remember to minimize twisting motions that can inure your back and joints.
Enjoy the healthful benefits of gardening this summer. Follow these simple precautions to keep safe and injury-free so you can play in your garden until the snow falls.

A recent study showed that in today’s economy, more and more people see estate planning as “discretionary” – something that can be put off until times are better. Unfortunately, disaster doesn’t know the difference between a bullish or bearish stock market, an employed versus unemployed person, or a younger individual versus an older individual. Simply put, the benefits of having a current, up-to-date estate plan far outweigh what happens if you don’t.
Let’s start with addressing what an estate plan does. An estate plan helps to document your preferences and instructions with regard to your financial affairs and more in the event of your incapacitation or death. The basic legal documents found in a typical estate plan include a last will and testament, a living will, a healthcare power of attorney and a financial power of attorney. Some individuals prefer to use trusts as a complement to, or sometimes in lieu of a last will and testament.
There are four components to a good estate plan, including:
- having proper legal documents for your situation
- a well organized catalog of all your important personal information and instructions for your family to access after your death
- a documented legacy – all the personal stories, accomplishments, and heritage information that you want passed to the next generation
- advanced communication – sharing your preferences, viewpoints and wishes with your loved ones.
People create estate plans for a variety of reasons. Some people have a strong desire to avoid probate. Remember, probate is simply the legal process whereby a court appointed person identifies all of your assets and liabilities and their value, pays your final bills, and distributes what’s left of your assets to your heirs according to law. Your probate officer is typically a close family member or friend, but can sometimes be an attorney or other professional. In some states, it’s actually quite a simple process. In other states it can be a little more complex.
If you want to know what strategies will help you better manage probate, a qualified estate planning attorney can assist you. He or she will make sure your beneficiary designations on your financial accounts and insurance policies are completed properly and will encourage you to consider various types of trusts.
Some people create an estate plan to make sure that their assets will be transferred in a tax efficient manner. Others who may be worried about creditors or the privacy of their estate settlement might find value in having a trust. Again, you’ll want to seek qualified legal assistance in creating an advanced technique like a trust.
Most importantly, an estate plan helps to ensure that your wishes and instructions are carried out in the manner you specify, that family harmony is maintained, and that your loved ones’ burdens in settling your affairs are minimized. Without a plan, the distribution of your property is provided for according to the law in the state where you resided or owned that property. Each state has this so called “intestacy law” which applies to individuals who die without a valid last will and testament. This body of law differs from state to state, but generally establishes an order by which your loved ones (e.g., spouse, children, parents, siblings, etc.) receive your property. This order may differ greatly from your actual intentions, which makes creating an estate plan one of the most important things you can do.

Have you noticed that your brakes squeal when you push on the pedal to stop? Have you been ignoring that unsightly puddle of liquid that keeps appearing under your car? Small inconveniences can become much larger problems if not taken care of early, and unfortunately, many drivers fail to address vehicle problem signs until it’s too late. Frequent checks and proper maintenance can make all the difference between a safe, attractive vehicle and an unreliable eyesore. Fixing Cars for the Summer
With a few tips, you can get your vehicle into top shape for easy cruising this summer and beyond. Fixing Cars for the Summer
Don’t wait, fix it fast Fixing Cars for the Summer
Fortunately, you can avoid these ugly and potentially costly problems by using a touch up paint such as Dupli-Color Scratch Fix touch-up paint. Available in hundreds of exact-match colors, the paint offers a seamless fix to nearly any vehicle damage. With a roller ball tip for precision, taper brush for full coverage and available clear coat to ensure an exact manufacturer-approved match, Scratch Fix is extremely easy for anyone to use and costs only a fraction of a professional repair.
Rolling on out
Tires are one of the most important aspects of vehicle safety, and proper maintenance can prolong tread life and save money on replacements. Rotating tires every 7,000 miles can help keep treads from wearing irregularly. A simple tire rotation not only makes for a dependable vehicle, but also saves money in the long run because your tires will last longer.
Another tire must is to regularly check for uneven wear, bulges or holes. These small issues may not seem like much, but they have a very real possibility of causing larger problems such as a tire blow out or skidding on the road. If a defect is spotted, make sure to have that tire replaced immediately.
Internal workings
Despite the warnings, many people put off changing their vehicle oil far longer than recommended. Whether the excuse is lack of time, money or some other factor, regular oil changes are vital to proper car maintenance. No matter what time of year or how often you drive, you need to check oil every three months or 3,000 miles – whichever occurs first. Changing oil will prevent residue buildup, allowing your vehicle to function more efficiently and safely. Forgoing this routine check could lead to an unexpected engine seize, causing costly and potentially dangerous damage.
Lights out
A burnt-out light bulb in your living room can be a nuisance, but a burnt-out light on your car can be extremely dangerous, and may even earn you a traffic ticket. Perform regular inspections of your car lights by turning all lights on – including turn signals – then walking around the car to determine if any need to be replaced. Car lights are typically inexpensive and are usually easy to install. The risks of ignoring a burnt-out car light far outweigh the cost of the bulb, so perform a quick check before your next night drive.
By taking these car care maintenance steps you will have your vehicle running and looking great this summer and beyond. Keeping Vehicle Safe this Summer

Did you know that only 35% of Americans have a Last Will and Testament, and only 29% have financial or healthcare power of attorney documents? Some reasons offered by the study for not having these important documents are listed below: Last Will and Testament Importance
- 1 in 5 people (20%) thought that their assets would automatically transfer to their spouse or family
- Another 20% thought it was too expensive
- 11% didn’t believe it was necessary
- 9% thought it just took too much time
Dying Without a Will
Intestacy laws set forth a ranking, or order, of recipients your assets will be distributed to after you pass. While laws differ from state to state, generally the ranking provides that:
- Assets will transfer to your spouse first
- If you don’t have a spouse, then your children are next in line
- If you have no children, then your parents – if they are still alive — receive your assets
- If you have no living parents, your assets will go to your brothers and/or sisters
- If you are an only child or your siblings aren’t alive, then your nieces and nephews stand next in the order to receive assets
How does this sound to you? Many people would probably agree that this order isn’t well-aligned with their actual intent. This not only applies to your financial assets but also to your precious items of personal importance.
Another major issue is applicable for those with minor children. If you and your spouse/partner pass at the same time and there is no will, the court will appoint a guardian. Most, if not all loving parents would agree that this would be a highly undesirable situation. This has an even greater impact for unmarried couples with minor children.
Bottom line
Without a will or appropriate legal documents, there will be no way to identify or honor your intentions.

With the spring season underway, we’re sure many of us are itching to get outside and enjoy the long-awaited bright, sunny days. And there are plenty of ways for you to enjoy the outdoors this spring – walking in the park or around the neighborhood, playing golf, visiting the local zoo. But there’s another springtime activity that you can do right in your own backyard: gardening! Tending to Your Garden AND Your Health
Did you know that just 30 to 45 minutes of gardening activity, such as mowing the lawn, weeding and planting flowers, burns up to 200 calories? As an added bonus, gardening can also improve your strength, mobility and endurance. Even though gardening is a great way to tend to your health, it’s important to be aware of the following garden safety tips for seniors so you can stay safe and benefit your health.
Safety First!
When it comes to staying safe in your garden, it’s important to go back to the basics. Before you even begin gardening, take a look at any safety hazards that may be hiding in your yard, such as broken steps, roots, etc. To prevent trips and falls, wear properly-fitted clothing that isn’t too long or baggy along with gloves and sturdy shoes with good traction. And don’t forget about insect repellant to keep those pesky bugs away!
Inspect Your Gardening Tools
Along with checking your lawn and garden for any safety hazards, inspecting your gardening tools is another thing you should do before you start gardening. Make sure all of your tools and equipment is working properly, and if needed, carefully sharpen tools before use. To avoid other accidents, use lightweight tools that are easy to handle.
Fun in the Sun
Gardening is certainly a fun way to get some exercise, but while you’re having fun in the sun, it’s important to remember some sun safety tips. To prevent sunburn and skin cancer, wear long sleeves, long pants, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Remember to reapply sunscreen (with SPF 15 or higher) and drink plenty of water if you’re in the sun for long periods of time.
Keep your Medical Alert Device with You
It can be easy to forget that accidents can happen anywhere – even in your own backyard. All of Medical Guardian’s medical alert systems provide guaranteed, round-the-clock protection both inside and around your home, so you know that you can still get help should you fall or experience another emergency in your garden.
Make it Fun!
Gardening may be a form of exercise, but that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t have fun doing it! Be sure to vary your daily gardening activities to keep it fun and to get the most health benefits. Enlist the help of family, friends or even neighbors to add a social component to gardening – this is also a great way to pass on your gardening wisdom to the next generation!
Above all, listen to your body. Know your limitations, and do what is reasonable and safe for you. Just keep these garden safety tips for seniors in mind, and both your garden and your health will bloom in no time!

Owning a pet can be a wonderful and rewarding experience. When you adopt a dog or a cat you have the opportunity to offer them a loving future. There is nothing like walking in your front door and being greeted by a happy, slobbering puppy. Few things are more comforting than sitting on the couch and having your cat quietly crawl up into your lap. Beneficial Pet Medications
Animals get sick just like people do, but the problem is they can’t tell you their symptoms. That is why it is important to take your dog or cat straight to the vet whenever anything seems out of the ordinary. Here are a few beneficial pet medications that you might encounter the next time your special friend is feeling under the weather.
Novox (carpofen) Caplets
There are several different occasions when your veterinarian might prescribe your dog Novox caplets. For one, they might help to reduce pain after your dog has had orthopedic or soft tissue surgery. More commonly, however, your vet will recommend Novox for dogs that suffer from osteoarthritis.
Arthritis in dogs is becoming almost as common as it is in humans. Part of this is due to over-breeding, but the main reason is that because of advances in veterinary technology, dogs are simply living to an older age these days. This medication will help to reduce inflammation in the joints and can also help to reduce pain.
In many instances, your vet will recommend a glucosamine product in addition to anti-inflammatory medicine. The Novox will help to reduce pain at the moment, but the glucosamine will help prevent it from getting worse.
Cosequin Soft Chews
Human beings will often use a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement to help maintain full functionality in their joints. Veterinarians have now developed similar supplements designed specifically for dogs.
Cosequin is administered to provide cartilage support to pets who suffer from arthritis. Even if your dog doesn’t have arthritis, you can talk to your vet and see if a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement like Cosequin can help to prevent it from developing in the future.
Cosequin is convenient because you can administer the chewable tablet with food. The best way to get your pet to swallow it is to wrap it up in a piece of cheese and pretend you are giving them a special treat. Just make sure they swallow the medicine and don’t just eat the good stuff and spit out the pill.
Amitriptyline Tablets
It can be frightening when your cat starts exhibiting erratic behavior. Grooming is normal, but sometimes cats do it so excessively that they can hurt themselves. Other times you might catch them spraying urine around the house. And sometimes you can just tell that they are going through separation anxiety every time you walk out the door.
Cats go through mental problems just like human beings do. Amitriptyline is a drug that can treat many of these behavioral problems in your cat. Not only can it help to curb behavior issues, but your vet may also prescribe it to reduce chronic pain from a nerve injury or to treat inflammation from a urinary tract infection. As with any medication regiment, be sure to talk to your veterinarian first to see if these tablets are right for your cat.
Gabapentin Capsules and Tablets
The first time you see your pet go through a seizure can be a frightening experience. Living with an epileptic pet can also make you nervous all the time. What if you are at the dog park and your pup suffers a seizure? Will it freak out the other dogs and lead them to attack your pet?
Gabapentin is a medication that is designed to help control seizures in cats or dogs. Sometimes your vet may also prescribe this drug to reduce chronic pain from a recent surgery or due to arthritis. For seizure control, your vet will normally recommend that you administer the drug three times every day. However, if you are only using it for a pain reducer, then you might only have to give it to your dog or cat once or twice a day.
The responsibilities that come with having a pet are well worth the rewards. When you do everything in your power to keep your dog or cat happy and healthy, they will be sure to repay you with unconditional love for years to come.
When you join Medicare you may want to add coverage for your prescription medications. Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (MPDC, or Part D) will cover both brand-name drugs and generic at participating pharmacies. Part D helps to protect you from unexpected drug expenses and help you better predict your medical spending.
If you want to enroll in Medicare Part D, make sure to do so when first eligible. If you do so at a later date, you will have to pay penalty fees that will last as long as you have the drug plan. When you do choose to join Medicare Part D, your premium cost will increase by a minimum of 1% per month for every month that you waited to join.
Coverage:
- Formulary: a list of all drugs that a Medicare drug plan covers. Includes generic and brand name drugs.
- Prior Authorization: Some drugs cost more than others, even though the less pricey drug is just as effective. Other drugs may have more side effects, or restrictions on how long they can be taken. To help ensure drugs are being taken properly, and when truly needed, some plans may require “prior authorization”. Prior authorization is when your doctor provides the plan with proof that there is a medically necessary reason you must use a particular drug.
Coverage Gap:
- If you have high drug costs, you may consider which plans offer additional coverage until you spend $4.350 out-of-pocket. In some plans, if your costs reach an initial coverage limit, then you pay 100% of your prescription costs. This is called the coverage gap. This “gap” in coverage is generally above $2,700 in total drug costs until you spend $4,350 out-of-pocket. Some plans might offer some coverage during the gap. Even in plans where you pay 100% of covered drug costs after a certain limit, you would still pay less for your prescriptions than you would without this drug coverage.
Convenience:
- Drug plans have to contract with certain pharmacies in your area. Check your plan to see which pharmacies are included. Some plans will also offer mail order prescriptions.
How does Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage work with Employer or Union coverage?
- If your drug coverage from your employer/union is on average at least as good as MPDC, you can keep it as long as its offered.
- If your employer/union coverage stops, you will have a special enrollment period to sign up for MPDC (with no penalty fee).
Do you remember when you were raising that houseful of kids? It seemed that there was never a moment’s peace for you. Of course, as a parent you like being with your children. But when you got home from a long days work, sometimes a little peace and quiet was what you were hoping for rather than a chorus of needs, demands, complaints and requirements for litigation of their petty squabbles. But that’s what you got and you were dad so you took care of business for your family. Change of Life Seasons
In our senior years, we have the opposite problem from getting too much of the kids. The challenge you have which is a universal problem seniors go through, is how to get more of the kids not less. There are plenty of enticements to make you want to see them more. They are grown up now so when you see them, it’s like visiting with a friend rather than mentoring a youth. They are the adults now so they might even pick up the tab at the restaurant from time to time. And of course, there is that one magical world that draws to you want to see your children all the time– grandchildren.
So how do you go about enticing those kids to invite you over? You don’t want it to be something they do out of guilt. You want winning not whining when it comes to finding ways to make them want to see you as much as you want to see them.
Whining is universally ineffective. Nonetheless, if you poll other seniors, the guilt and whining and guilt method of trying to get their kids attention seems to be the mode of the day. A better way to create that same desire in your kids to see you is to be to them who they want you to be – wise old granddad and sweet loving grandma.
If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, that principle certainly applies when it comes to your children and grandchildren. And your kids, no matter how great their married life is, have warm memories of your apple pie or that special smell of cinnamon roles that only mom can make. So bake for them often and let them know the kitchen is always open at grandma’s house and moochers are honored guests here.
Sometimes it gets overlooked in the hubbub of raising a family but your children will always need their mommy and daddy. If the door is open for them to call you or drop by for a glass of wine and some sage counsel, they will come through that door. Don’t be pushy and don’t be whiney about it. But if you gently check in with them and when you hear that special tone in your offspring’s voice that is quietly saying, “Daddy I need help”, you have a special coded phrase you can use to bring them to you.
For me, whenever my kids needed me but were too proud or too much a “teenager” to ask, I just said softly and lovingly, “What’s eating you, Sweetpea?” That phrase said it all. It said that the court of wise counsel was open for business and that this was an ear that would listen before it spoke and never judge you no matter what a mess you may have gotten yourself into.
Then there is that magic word we spoke of earlier – grandchildren. Those little bundles of energy love to see grandpa and grandma. So by keeping the door open to them, your kids will find ways to get their little ones over to see you. Whether its for the cookies or the counsel or the chance for the little ones to hear grandpa’s jokes or for your daughter in law to learn your secret for growing prize winning tomatoes, you have some bait to lure those kids to come see you. So use that bait to entice them to see you. And the more they find grandmas house is a place of fun and love, the more they will love to come over. Change of Life Seasons
Many in the desert area retire before reaching age 65. Of those who do, a large number were once self employed. Leaving your job or business behind also means leaving your group health insurance behind and, even with the Affordable Care Act, premiums for those between 60 and 65 can be very expensive. Aging into Medicare
That’s why so many seniors are actually relieved to see that 65th birthday on the horizon. Getting your Medicare card means saying goodbye to your expensive, private health plan. However, the relief of finally receiving Medicare can be replaced by the total confusion of the plan options. One of the most common questions I hear is, “Why is Medicare so confusing?”
When you are within a few months of turning 65, these plans will inundate you with mail. They compete hard for your business. Each new member means thousands a year from Medicare, paid to the plan to take you off the Medicare rolls. The insurer hopes to make a profit by keeping you healthy. Nothing wrong with that! But, an HMO can severely limit your choice of facilities and doctors, they are regional, and these plans are not your only choice.
Some seniors have already had health issues. They may have specialists they wish to continue seeing and hospitals that they know they want to continue to access. In these cases, it might be better to stay with Medicare and add a Medicare Supplement instead. When you turn 65, a Medicare supplement is a guaranteed issue policy; you can’t be turned down. It’s one of the few times that you can get this type of policy with no health screening. With a supplement you still pay your Medicare premium, and you also pay your private insurer, for your supplemental plan. Your premiums are higher (the Anthem Blue Cross F plan is $150 per month at age 65), but you can now see any doctor or go to any hospital, anywhere in the country, that accepts Medicare. Your supplement pays all deductibles and co-pays that Medicare does not, as long as it is approved by Medicare.
Your first Medicare choice then comes down to lower premiums with less choice, or higher premiums with more choice. Aging into Medicare
